Greece

religious retreats all over Greece. Come and experience an

Is a religious retreat needed? Yes, it should be a vital part in
our lives. With today’s fast paced world we have forgotten our
religions and traditions that accompany them. Without guidance
from our lord we lose our direction in life. A religious retreat
needed when we have lost our connection with God and ourselves.
Such a vacation is necessary in order for us to withdraw from
our everyday activities and take the time out to commune with
God in prayers and recollection.
Some famous places for religious retreats are Tinos, Corfu and
Crete. This will not be just another ordinary holiday it will be
a holiday filled with energy, power and a lifetime of
experiences.
Greece offers magnificent places for a serene and unique
religious retreat, In many regions of Greece the visitor also
has the opportunity to come across buildings and places of
worship belonging to other doctrines and religions which co –
exist in a continuous dialogue promoting the historical and
cultural side of Greece.
Byzantine and post Byzantine churches in cities and small
villages , cathedrals , small churches in the country side
monasteries and cells , decorated with excellent mosaics,
paintings and icons are evidence to the persistence of faith and
tradition.
A well known religious retreat destination is Tinos, it lies on
the southern tip of Andros. Tinos, is the holy Island of our
Lady. This is an ideal church for serenity and to find your
inner self and reconnect with God. On August 15th
it’s flooded with visitors who come to pray in her church or in
the fulfillment of a vow.
Another very popular religious retreat is the St.Paul retreat.
Retreatants follow the steps of St.Paul through the biblical
sites of Corinth, Lachaion, Cenchera,,Athens, Thessaloniki,
Philippi, Christoupolis,(today’s Kavala)- the first European
city to convert to Christianity and the island of Rhodes. This
will be a journey to an unforgettable religious experience.
Crete is especially known for its religious retreats. In
Rethymno you will find a monastery called Agia Irini, which is
newly built for women. The ladies (nuns) who live there are
fairly young. It is customary to visit the monastery early in
the morning or after 5 pm till closing, the in between times are
solitary times that these unique dwellers require.
Corfu has a unique monastery for a special religious retreat. The
monastery Pantokrator is a must see. Its name originates from
Pantokrator of Askitariou. It was built in 1950. It took its
name from asceticism carved in stone. Being the core of
spiritual luminous it supported the faith of the Corfiotes for
many years. Many Byzantine Emperors honored it with their golden
bulls. Inside the church of Pantokrator we find unique murals
the depict scenes from the Old Testament.
After visiting Pantokrator to complete your retreat you must
visit the church of Saint Spyridon , our patron saint and
protector of the island. In the church you will find his body
enshrined in a silver gilt case exposing his body for public
worship. Thousands of pilgrims pay homage by day and night and
kiss his slippered feet. Many are the miracles attributed to the
saint and many people suffering from incurable diseases are
relieved from their ailment.
