With more than 4,000 years of history and with past presence  on its lands , some of the greatest civilizations ever, Greece has much to show and to boast about to the visitor. The museums of Greece are usually built were excavations took place and where great civilizations once prospered. Enhance your knowledge by visiting one of these great museums while you’re on holiday in Greece.

Following, is a brief account of a few of the most important museums in Greece.

The Acropolis museum- This museum is considered one of the most important museums in the world. It’s considered the cradle of modern civilization. It temporarily houses masterpieces of the Ancient Greek civilization, dedicated to the most important of the Athenian sanctuaries, the “temenos” of Athena Parthenos.  Groundwork for the erection of the new Acropolis has already begun. Many unique works of art that decorated the Acropolis have been stolen. The most terrible marauding took place in the beginning of the19th century by Lord Elgin. The museum was designed by the architect Panages Kalkos and constructed between 1865 and 1874.In the1950’s it was extended towards the east and the exhibition was rearranged by the archaeologist I.Miliades.

On Vassilissis Sophias   Avenue you will find an array of Museums but the one that stands out is the war museum of Athens, which explores the history of warfare. It was inaugurated in 1975. This museum covers a period of thousands of years, from pre-historic times until today and features all sorts of weapons from stone – axes to heavy artillery. In this museum you will also find a well organized library.

The Byzantine Museum – It was founded in 1914. From 1930 and on, it  has been housed in the “Ilisia Mansion”, which belonged to the Duchess of Placentia. It was built in 1848 by the Architect Stamatis Kleanthos and later it was transformed into a museum by another architect, Aristotle Zachos.

This Byzantine museum shows the course of Greek art from the 4th to the 19th century. It compromises sculpture works, paintings and small works of all sorts.

The National Archaelogical Museum of Athens- This is the most important of all Archaelogical museums in Greece. It exhibits on e of the finest collections in the world. The museum displays a magnificent collection of pre-historic items, sculpture, pottery and minor art, Bronzes and Egyptian art.

Delphi Museum- The first museum of Delphi was built in 1903on the plans of the French Architect Tournaire and was later incorporated in a larger edifiec, constructed in 1980.

The museum contains exclusively finds from the site of Delphi, mostly offerings and architectural parts.

The Cycladic Art museum- It’s a private collection of Cycladic Art and considered as the most important one. It’s composed of more than 350 objects of the central Aegean Area dated between 3,200 and 2,000 B.C. The Cycladic Art is characterized by these figurines which inspired many contemporary artists.
