Greece Festivals
Greece is country with limitless cultural traditions, festival
and folklore. Each summer in Greece numerous events take place.
Visitors have many opportunities to enrich their travels by
attending the various cultural or sports events held in every
region of the country. The following are some of the major
events.
The Hellenic Festival- It takes place in Athens, Herodes
Atticus theater from June 2 to September 28. It offers a large
range of performances such as modern and ancient theater,
ballet, opera, jazz singers and many other special events.
Epidaurus Festival- this ancient theater of Epidaurus welcomes a
festival of classical drama performances every summer during the
months of July and August. It is one of Greece’s top event which
attracts thousands of visitors very year.
Rockawave Festival – The Rockwave Festival which welcomes every
summer in Athens, during 3 days international and national bands
and musicians all night long.
Samothraki Festival – The Samothraki Island world music festival
apart from a musical event it’s an important gathering for
ecology. It will take place in Samothraki Island in July from 21st
– 24th.
The International Thessaloniki Film Festival – Has become the “
Balkans” primary showcase for the work of new and emerging
filmmakers as well as leading film festival in the region.
Since, 1992, this festival has striven to present the most
original independent films from around the world. The event
features the International section, the panorama of Greek films,
The Independence day’s program, the Balkan survey and numerous
retrospectives and tributes to leading figures in the world of
film.
Feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary - Koimisis tis
Theotokos , Dormition of the Virgin Mary or Assumption of the
Virgin Mary. For the Greek Orthodox this is a most eminent day.
This is the day that the Greek Orthodox calendar marks the
moment when the devout believe that Mary the Theotokos ascended
into Heaven, in other words many believe that there was a
miraculous transport of Mary , in bodily form, to heaven after
her death. Churches throughout Greece celebrate the feast with
traditions that vary from place to place. Rural churches are
packed with not only worshippers but offerings in the form of
animals, property and food. Some churches even hold auctions of
these offerings during the celebrations. Although Greece becomes
very crowded during this festival it’s a rich and wonderful time
to be here. This day is celebrated on August 15th.
Festivals on Corfu- The following events have become a tradition
on Corfu Island.
The grand Prix Formula 1 Championship, the Billiard world
championship1998, the Harley Davidson Meeting, the classical
cars meeting and the 1st computer symposium.
During the summer months Corfu’s town philharmonic bands often
give open air concerts which are attended by both Corfiotes and
tourists alike. Then there’s the Corfu Festivals that’s held
every September and include concerts dance shows, operas and
theatrical performances.
